Few things derail a workday like Wi-Fi that works, then doesn't, then works again. Laptops fall off video calls, the card reader times out, and someone inevitably suggests "just restart the router" for the third time before lunch. 1. It's not the Wi-Fi — it's the internet
Half of "Wi-Fi problems" are actually the internet connection behind it. If wired computers stumble at the same moments as wireless ones, your access point is innocent — look at the modem, the ISP line, or an aging cable connection. A quick test: when the Wi-Fi "drops," check whether a device plugged directly into the router still reaches the internet. If it doesn't, the conversation belongs with your ISP, and having timestamps of the outages makes that conversation dramatically more productive.
2. A home router doing a business's job
The router your office got from the ISP — or the consumer model someone grabbed years ago — was designed for a family, not for thirty devices, a VoIP system, guest phones, and a card terminal all working at once. Consumer gear overheats, runs out of memory, and quietly reboots itself under load, which looks exactly like "the Wi-Fi keeps dropping." 3. Coverage designed by accident
Many offices have one access point wherever the internet happens to enter the building — which means the conference room at the far end lives at the edge of the signal. Devices at the fringe don't disconnect cleanly; they hang on with a weak signal, drop, reconnect, and drop again. Walls, metal shelving, and even large appliances carve dead zones. 4. Channel congestion from the neighbors
In office parks and strip centers, your Wi-Fi shares the air with every business around you. When several networks pile onto the same channel, they take turns talking — and everyone's connection stutters. Most routers claim to pick channels automatically and do it badly. Manually setting clean channels after scanning the actual environment often produces an immediate, noticeable improvement, especially on the crowded 2.4 GHz band.
5. Too many devices, one exhausted radio
Count honestly: laptops, phones, printers, cameras, TVs, thermostats, card readers. Offices are routinely surprised to find fifty-plus devices on a network built for ten. A single overloaded access point drops its quietest clients first, seemingly at random. 6. Firmware and failing hardware
